(The following is a transcript from a discussion Dr. Gardner conducted with the False Self.)

“What made you decide to have a garage sale, False Self?”  I asked.

“Well when all these people come back from their Mindset Retreat, they are no longer listening to me.  So I decided to get rid of some items I have overstocked.”  The False Self looked kind of sad when it said this.

“Ok,” I said.  “What are some of the items you are putting up for sale?”

“Jealousy.   Hatred.   Resentment.  Sadness.  Guilt.  Anger.  And certain Addictions sold in separate packages.  They are really going for a cheap price right now. For all I know I may be going out of business soon....”  The False Self announced.

“Wow!  That is a pretty scroungy group of feelings you have there!” I commented as I saw that the False Self had tried to display these items attractively but they looked pretty grim.   Evil, even.

Then I saw another item placed high on a shelf by itself and priced considerably higher than the rest.  “What is that up there on the top shelf for sale?”  I asked the False Self.

“Oh, that!” said the False Self, “that’s Doubt.”

“Well,”  I wondered, “Why is it so much more expensive than the rest?”

“Because of its power to override the True Self,”  said the False Self. “I have found it will always work even after people think they have me under control.”

“Why is Doubt so powerful to you?”  I asked the False Self.

“Well, because people don’t recognize it when they have it.  I have found I can get inside just about everybody’s head so easily with Doubt.”  The False Self was eager to share.

“You said ‘just about everybody’?. Who does it not work on?”  I was eager to here the reply.

“Oh, it never works when your clients are working toward that thing you call “Mindset for Success”, where they are counting their wins and feeling so grateful.”  said the False Self quietly.

Hum.....seems like a Mindset of Success is worth a lot!
